Courtyard & Decking Transformation, Truro

This Truro courtyard project involved the complete transformation of a tired, uneven outdoor space into a modern, safe and highly usable garden terrace. The brief focused on resolving long-standing structural issues while creating a clean, contemporary finish that would stand the test of time.

The result is a bright, low-maintenance courtyard with a reconfigured staircase connecting seamlessly to the lower garden - delivering both visual impact and improved day-to-day usability.

Before: An Uneven, Unusable Space

Before work began, the courtyard was dominated by an ageing timber deck and an old stone patio that had clearly reached the end of their lifespan.

Key issues included:

  • Rotten decking boards creating an unsafe walking surface

  • Uneven paving slabs with suspected subsidence

  • A layout that felt tired, dark and impractical

  • Steps that were steep and awkward to navigate

Overall, the space was largely unusable and no longer suitable for modern outdoor living.

During: Structural Solutions & Material Upgrades

Addressing the underlying structural problems was the priority.

To stabilise the space:

  • Small retaining walls were introduced to properly support the patio area

  • An additional retaining wall was constructed to strengthen the decking supports and prevent future movement

Material choices were carefully considered. While timber decking was initially discussed, the decision was made to upgrade to long-lasting composite decking for durability and reduced maintenance. This was paired with a porcelain patio, selected for its clean finish, slip resistance and modern aesthetic.

As part of the build:

  • The existing staircase was fully reconfigured

  • The new stair layout was designed to be less steep, improving safety and ease of access between levels

After

The completed courtyard is now a smart, contemporary outdoor space that feels both practical and welcoming.

The finished result includes:

  • A clean porcelain patio with a bright, modern appearance

  • Composite decking that delivers longevity without ongoing upkeep

  • Brand-new timber balustrading and detailing

  • A completely rebuilt wooden staircase leading safely to the lower garden

The homeowner was delighted with the transformation - praising the modern look, improved safety and the way the new layout makes the entire garden feel more connected and usable.
