Low Maintenance Garden Transformation, St Agnes

This garden transformation in St Agnes, Cornwall focused on creating a low-maintenance, structured planting spacethat would feel more private and easier to manage throughout the year.

The original garden had become slightly overgrown and exposed, with a large lawn area that required ongoing upkeep and offered limited visual structure. The aim of the redesign was to simplify the space, introduce natural textures, and create a garden that would mature beautifully while remaining easy to maintain.

Before

The original garden consisted largely of open lawn with informal planting, which had gradually become slightly wild and difficult to manage. The space also felt overlooked by neighbouring properties, offering limited privacy and structure.

While the garden had potential, it lacked defined planting areas and required regular maintenance to keep the lawn and borders under control.

The goal for the redesign was to:

  • Reduce lawn and ongoing maintenance requirements

  • Introduce structured planting beds

  • Improve the sense of privacy within the garden

  • Create a more natural and visually interesting landscape

During

The transformation began with a full ground preparation process using a mini digger to reshape and prepare the space.

Existing lawn and soil were carefully removed and re-graded to create new planting areas and contours throughout the garden. Natural stone elements were repositioned and integrated into the design to provide structure and texture.

During the construction phase:

  • Ground levels were adjusted to improve the overall layout

  • Existing stone was reused to form natural retaining edges and borders

  • The garden beds were prepared ready for planting

  • Bark mulch was introduced to suppress weeds and retain moisture

This groundwork provided the foundation for a garden that would be both functional and visually cohesive.

After

The finished garden is now a calm, low-maintenance planting space designed to evolve naturally over time.

Lawn areas were replaced with bark-mulched planting beds, reducing maintenance while improving soil health and moisture retention. Carefully selected plants were introduced to provide year-round interest and structure.

Key design features include:

  • Stepping stone pathways that guide movement through the garden

  • Layered planting to soften boundaries and improve privacy

  • Natural stone edging that complements the landscape

  • Bark mulch beds that reduce ongoing garden maintenance

The result is a garden that feels more private, more structured, and far easier to care for, while still maintaining a natural and relaxed aesthetic suited to the Cornish landscape.

As the planting continues to establish and mature, the garden will become even richer in texture and colour.
